RCMP need your help fighting CRA scam

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police still need the public's help bringing down a stubborn scam.

Police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre say the Canada Revenue Agency scam is still active and targeting Canadians.

They have been working with law enforcement abroad to dismantle an illegal call centre network in India, which they say is responsible for the scam and other mass marketing-related frauds.

Between last September and January of this year, more than 60 people at 40 different call centres have been arrested and now face prosecution in India.

However, police continue to develop leads, so they are reaching out to the public for any tips or information that can lead to more arrests in India or Canada.

The RCMP is also offering tips to avoid being taken in by the scam. It said the agency will never call and threaten you to pay a tax debt, and it will never tell you there is a warrant for your arrest. It will never ask you to pay a tax debt through the use of crypto currencies or gift cards, and it can not have you deported for not paying your taxes.

If you suspect a caller is involved in the scam, hang up and call report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
