Rough weekend expected along Lake Erie shore due to wind & rain

The Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) is advising people along the Lake Erie shoreline to be careful.

Strong winds gusting between 80 and 90 km/h are expected from Saturday night until Sunday night and they could push lake ice onshore along the western shoreline of Pelee Island and the Lake Erie shoreline west of Point Pelee.

Rain amounting to 15 millimetres is also in the forecast for Saturday. ERCA said saturated soil and heavy downpours are expected to cause ponding in low lying areas, drainage catch basins, and other surface water drainage inlets in rural and urban areas.

"People should take extra caution to avoid shoreline areas during wind/lake wave events," said the conservation authority in a statement on Friday. "Ice cover will be unstable and dangerous. A combination of slippery banks, moving/melting ice and cold water is particularly dangerous."

This advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. on Tuesday.
