Police reminding parents of online safety precautions

Police are issuing a warning to parents after a child in LaSalle gave out personal information to a stranger online.

According to LaSalle Police Service’s Facebook page, on February 14 a resident reported some suspicious messages on their child’s iPad. The message was from someone the child did not know.

The messages were sent through the chat portion of an online game called Roblox.

Through their investigation, police discovered the child also received a friend request from the same username on another online game.

Although the child had been previously instructed not to give out private information online, they did.

Police could find no evidence a criminal offence had been committed during the conversation.

Following the incident, LaSalle Police are urging parents to monitor their children’s online activity constantly and to educate them the importance of never giving out personal information online, especially to someone they do not know personally.
