Family skating event to aid women and families

In an effort to raise donations for women and families in need, a free family skate is being held this weekend in Windsor.

The fifth annual Family Skate and Donate event will be held at the Capri Pizzeria Recreational Complex on Saturday, February 16 from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. The event will be hosted by Windsor West MP Brian Masse.

CUPE Local 82 is a partner again this year and will be collecting donations for the House of Sophrosyne, a charity that has been active in Windsor-Essex for 40 years providing programs and services to women and their families. Items such as toiletries and personal care items, hats, scarves, gloves, socks and craft supplies are needed.

"Our mission still today after 40 years is to offer an evidence-based philosophy of empowerment in treating women and families for substance misuse," said Karen Waddell, executive director at the House of Sophrosyne. "We are so fortunate to be the recipient of such a generous and supportive community for the past four decades."

There will be complimentary refreshments, pizza, pasta, desserts and coffee.

All attendees will receive a free raffle ticket compliments of Unifor Local 444 and will be entered into the draw scheduled for 6:15 p.m. and those with donations you will be given additional tickets to be entered into the prize raffle.

Volunteers are still needed to assist those who cannot skate.
