Lakeshore preps for potential flooding at Lighthouse Cove

With an ice jam continuing to cause problems in Chatham-Kent, the Town of Lakeshore is monitoring developments as they pertain to Lighthouse Cove.

As of Friday afternoon, the ice jam in the Thames River that has increased the threat of flooding in Chatham-Kent has moved to the mouth of the Thames at Lake St. Clair. A breach in a dike has resulted in flooding at Jeannette's Creek.

Lakeshore officials said there is an open channel for water at Lighthouse Cove to flow in the middle of the river with no ice movement at the dock, keeping the water flow moving into the lake. Nevertheless, the municipality has prepared to mobilize the emergency operations centre if needed and is working with Mayor Tom Bain to help with any emergency declaration.

Residents who would like to stay a step ahead of any flood waters and sandbag their homes can pick up sand and bags at two locations on Haven Drive and Lakeshore Road 301 near Gracey Sideroad. Bring your shovels to fill the bags.

Those living in the Lighthouse Cove area are asked to do the following:

  • Move and secure belongings away from the water and to higher ground should the water levels rise
  • Remove electrical components from the floor wherever possible
  • Move valuables to a safe, dry place
  • Refrain from walking, riding or driving through flood waters
  • Monitor local media such as BlackburnNews.com for continued updates
The municipality will alert residents in the event the situation becomes an emergency.
