Windsor Regional Hospital is reporting a milder flu season

This flu season at Windsor Regional Hospital hasn't been as bad as the last flu season.

The hospital is reporting 42 cases so far at the Met Campus and 20 at the Ouellette Campus this season. Last season, Met had 61 flu cases and Ouellette had 102.

CEO David Musyj said his staff has yet to see any flu in patients over the age of 65 this season and credits the flu vaccine for that achievement. He said the majority of the flu cases have been among individuals under 65. Musyj added the hardest hit with the flu so far this season are those between 40 and 60 years old, along with children under 10.

He also reported there have been no flu outbreaks in local nursing homes or long term care homes so far.

Musyj said the milder flu season has helped reduce his emergency department wait times to an average of 4.4 hours in January and February. The provincial average is 20-plus hours.
