Inquest coming into deaths of three roofers

The provincial government has announced it will hold an inquest into the deaths of three men who died while roofing, including one from Windsor and one from Wallaceburg.

John Janssens died in January 2016 at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance's Sydenham Campus after suffering injuries in his fall. He was 73.

Michael Maukonen fell from the roof of a home on Menard Street. The 19-year-old fell in December 2015 after a lanyard disconnected from a safety line. He never regained consciousness and died in June 2016.

Dayus Roofing pled guilty to failing to ensure measures were taken to protect workers from falling and was fined $90,000.

The third man is from Inwood near Petrolia. William Swan fell while working on the roofing trusses of a barn on Rokeby Line last May. Swan was 56.

A release from Dr. Rick Mann, the regional supervising coroner for West Region, said the inquest would investigate the circumstances of all three deaths, and the jury will be tasked with making recommendations to prevent similar deaths in the future.

The date and location of the joint inquest will be announced at a later date, and Dr. Elizabeth Urbantke will preside as the inquest coroner.
