Cat found on county road passes away

The injuries were too severe for a cat found along a cold roadside in Essex County last month.

Elsa, who was brought into the Windsor-Essex County Humane Society after a concerned citizen found her along Trembley Sideroad in Essex on January 9, died in the arms of her foster owner Saturday, according to a Facebook post by the humane society which went up Saturday evening.

"Her neurological symptoms continued worsening, and despite active warming efforts, she continued to be hypothermic," read the post. "The Humane Society veterinarian who has been treating her consulted with the emergency veterinarian, and both agreed that the kindest option was to let her go. She passed peacefully in the arms of her foster mama."

Elsa was rushed to a veterinarian after being found cold and motionless on the roadside. Executive director Melanie Coulter of the humane society said at the time her condition was terrible.

“Emergency care was initiated to raise her body temperature, and she continues to receive intensive veterinary treatment,” said Coulter, who added that the cat's fur was matted to her body so tightly that it was trapping dirt and urine against the skin.

The cat's condition had stabilised to the point where she could go home with her foster owner, one of the humane society's medical staffers, and the likelihood of a full recovery was encouraging. However, Elsa reportedly still had trouble walking, and her body temperature never stayed at an ideal point to help her recovery.

The humane society is still looking for someone with information on the cat’s care, or who may have known who owned Elsa or left her abandoned. Anyone with information should call the humane society’s cruelty investigations department at (519) 966-5751, ext. 16. Anonymous tips can be phoned in to Crime Stoppers at (519) 258-TIPS.
