If you're cold, so are they

With the temperature expected to dip dangerously across the region, the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society wants you to think about your pets.

"We encourage all pet owners to consider bringing their pets indoors and making them part of the family," read a release from the humane society Tuesday.

Environment Canada is predicting a low of -21 C Tuesday night with a windchill of -34 C. It will be quite bitter over the next couple of days with Wednesday's high only reaching -20 C.

"If your pet is injured or killed by the cold, you can be charged under provincial law, with penalties of up to two years in prison and/or a fine of up to $60,000 upon conviction," the humane society said.

Under the law, dogs must be provided with an insulated shelter, fresh water, and food at all times.

The weather agency also encourages residents to report any animal you think may be neglected in the cold. The number to call is 519-966-5751, and it investigates every complaint it receives.

"If it's a behaviour issue that is preventing the animal from being brought inside, our behaviour staff would be happy to offer advice or assistance," the humane society said.

Recently, investigators at the humane society received a call about an abandoned cat that almost froze to death along a county road.

The cat was motionless by the time an officer arrived, and its organs were shutting down.
