Fear won't stop Muslims from practicing their religion, says Windsor Imam

A vigil at a Windsor Mosque to remember six Muslim men killed in a Quebec mosque two years ago had a strong message for terrorists.

"We gather as proud Canadians" and "Muslims are human beings before they are Muslim."

The men were killed in a terrorist attack at the Quebec mosque on January 29, 2017 while worshipping. The attack also injured 20 others.

Vigil organizers said they gathered on Tuesday in support of the victims because they cannot stay silent. One of the organizers, Imam Yousef Wahb said the Quebec attack was the first of its kind in Canada and promised the vigil will be an annual event to remember and educate.

"If we get to know each other more, I don't think these problems will happen more often," said Imam Wahb.

Imam Wahb said terrorist attacks will never stop Muslims from practicing their religion.

"No kind of fear or intimidation would happen for any Muslim to come to the mosque and practice religion freely," he said.

Imam Wahb said the Quebec City attack is not a reflection of how the majority of Canadians feel and think.

"This is not the opinion of the public majority of Canadians. It's just something odd that hopefully is not going to happen again," Imam Wahb said.

The vigil included local politicians, labour and community leaders, Windsor police, the general public, women and children.
