Local hockey team reaches fundraising semifinals (VIDEO)

A local peewee hockey team's humanitarian efforts have placed them on the national stage.

The Tecumseh Eagles' Peewee Red Blueberries have been named to the national semifinals of the Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup. They've placed in the national top-ten, which was revealed by "Hockey Night in Canada" host Ron McLean during the telecast Saturday night of the NHL All-Star Game in San Jose, California. They are asking their fans and the public for help to become one of the three teams nationwide to reach the finals.

Each participating hockey team submitted a video showing their work with the charity they chose. The Red Blueberries are seen in their video visiting Hospice and volunteering, by serving food and coffee, as well as learning from patients, their families, staff and other volunteers about how Hospice functions.

For reaching the semifinals, the Eagles have earned $2,000 for their designated charity, Hospice of Windsor and Essex County. They have also earned prize packs for their players.

The ten teams were chosen by Chevrolet and Hockey Canada, whose ambassadors include Leafs star Mitch Marner, multiple gold medal-winning women's player Caroline Ouellette, and Harnarayan Singh, the play-by-play host of the Punjabi-language version of "Hockey Night in Canada".

All ten videos are on the Good Deeds Cup's official web page. The three videos with the most hits will move on to the finals and receive $5,000 for their charity. The eventual grand prize winner will be given $100,000 for their charity, be featured on national television, and get a winner's ceremony in their hometown.
