Memorial planned for victim of vicious attack

There is a movement underway to commemorate the life of Sara Anne Widholm.

The 76-year-old woman died in the hospital on December 16, 2018, after being brutally beaten on the Ganatchio Trail in October of 2017.

Renee Rupert of Windsor created a GoFundMe page on Sunday to memorialize Widholm at the trail where she was attacked.

"This story has affected many of us, including myself," said Rupert.

Rupert said she attended the memorial service for Widholm and asked the family's permission to create a commemorative area along the Ganatchio Trail in memory of Widholm and her husband Alfred, who passed away four months after his wife was assaulted.

"The family liked the idea and was humbled at the fact this could be done," Rupert said. "With their permission I am now forging ahead to create a space in memory of this beautiful couple."

Rupert said the plan is to select an area along the Ganatchio Trail that would provide a sense of peace for those who want to linger. She added this space would include a bench on a cement foundation, a tree of the family's choice, a perennial garden around the tree, a commemorative plaque at the base of the tree and a plaque on the back of the bench. The total cost of the project is approximately $7,000.

Rupert said, so far, half the project is paid for but $3,500 still needs to be collected to make it a reality.

"Any monies we don’t use will be given to Anne and Alfred's church to go toward the benevolent fund," she added.

Nearly $300 has been collected so far.
