Police warn lead foots to beware

Police across Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent continue cracking down on drivers with their pedal to the metal.

Windsor Police caught a car going 156 km/h in a 100 km/h speed zone on E.C Row Exwy. near Walker Rd. on Tuesday at approximately 9:30 p.m. A 22-year-old Windsor man was charged with stunt driving, his car was impounded for seven days and his driver's licence was seized.

Essex County OPP, Chatham-Kent OPP and the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) also conducted traffic enforcement along Hwy. 401 and Hwy. 3 on Wednesday and laid several charges for speeding and following too closely.

Police warn that any person driving more than 50 km/h over the speed limit is considered to be stunt driving.

The MTO reports that the risk of a fatality or serious injury is almost five-times greater for vehicles crashing at 50 km/h or more above the speed limit with a posted limit of 100 km/h. The increase in risk is even greater on roads with lower posted limits.

Police are asking people to call 911 if they see an impaired driver, street racing, or other behaviour that poses an immediate risk to public safety.
