Ontario's Minister of Transportation has announced funding to help municipalities improve or expand their public bus systems.
The funding is from the province's gas tax program. A total of $364 million will be shared by 107 municipalities where 92 per cent of Ontario's population lives.
"We are investing in public transit to make it a more convenient travel option and to attract more riders," said Minister Jeff Yurek. "More public transit will cut through gridlock and get people moving."
Municipalities get two cents per litre of provincial gas tax revenues to use exclusively on public transit. It can be used to expand routes, buy new vehicles, increase accessibility, extend hours of service, or upgrade transit infrastructure.
Windsor will receive $3.9 million. Another $208,322 will go to Leamington, and $191,016 to Tecumseh.
Almost half of the funding, or almost $185 million, will go to the City of Toronto. London will receive more than $10 million, and Sarnia will get $1 million.
How much each municipality gets depends on a formula of 70 per cent ridership and 30 per cent population.
