Spitfires trade Morgan to Flint, hopeful for playoff spot

After a one year stint with the Windsor Spitfires, Cody Morgan will now be part of the Flint Firebirds.

The trade came Tuesday. In exchange for the 17-year-old centre, the Spits will get Flint's second-round pick in the 2020 OHL Draft and their fourth-round pick in 2021.

Morgan came from the Kingston Frontenacs in early 2018. During his time in Windsor, he played 65 regular season games, had eight goals and 15 assists.

"Cody was part of a larger trade," said Spitfires General Manager Warren Rychel. "It just didn't work out, he didn't get his footing, didn't get his confidence. I really like Cody and it's good to move him onto a team where he's going to play more. I'm happy for him."

The Spits are currently eighth in the standings, clinging to a playoff spot. Rychel admitted he thought the team would be higher but is still hopeful they will get a chance in the playoffs.

"We have to take a little bit of a step back, play the younger guys, they're going to go through some pains here but it's part of it. I've done it before and we just got to let it happen," said Rychel.

With the trade deadline on January 10, Rychel said with the exception of maybe a few minor moves, the team is pretty much done with any major trades. He said fans can look forward to seeing a powerful team next season.

"A very strong team next year. I thought we'd be a little bit stronger this year, but you'll see it next year. Guys are strong, older and a year wiser," Rychel said.

The Spit's next game is on Thursday at the WFCU Centre against the Sudbury Wolves.
