Survey suggests need for greater low-cost adult dental care

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has released the results of a survey on the dental health needs of adults in the region, and it finds that those without dental insurance are 17 times more likely to have problems accessing dental health care.

About 1,594 residents across Windsor-Essex took part in the survey.

The health unit said the results reinforce the need for adult dental health services. Few low-cost options exist in the community for adults.

"The results show that the health and well-being of adults in our community are being affected because they aren't able to access the dental services they need to stay healthy, and this is concerning," said Dr. Wajid Ahmed, acting medical officer of health.

The survey also found adults without dental insurance were two times more likely to experience a dental concern like a tooth or mouth pain, missing or loose teeth, and cavities. They were also 2.3 times more likely to have their dental concerns affect their ability to eat, socialize, or their self-esteem.

Oral health also appears to have a relationship with where respondents lived.

Adults living within the City of Windsor were least likely to have a dentist at 56%, while adults in LaSalle were most likely 86%. The percentage of adults that reported having good or excellent dental health ranged from a low of 33% in Essex to 65% in LaSalle.

Among those without insurance, the cost of dental care was identified as the biggest barrier to accessing services. The findings were regardless of income. However, those living in low-income households had to prioritize their financial resources to cover the cost of dental checkups and necessary treatment.

"The lack of access to dental care results in a greater burden of disease and additional strain on the health care system, as individuals with dental health needs visit the emergency department seeking relief," the report stated in its executive summary.
