Six Essex County Communities among the safest in Canada

If you live in Essex County, chances are you live in a safe community.

Maclean's Magazine says Amherstburg did not make the top spot this year as it has in years past, but it did place number three on the list behind Rothesay and Quispamsis, New Brunswick.

Six local municipalities placed in the top 15 this year.

Macleans calculated the safest communities using the crime severity index established by Statistics Canada in 2006. The index measures not only the frequency of all police-reported crime per 100,000 residents, but also the severity of the offences committed.

Amherstburg had a crime severity index of just 20.93. The average across Canada is 72.9, while Windsor's is 71.7.

Here's how other communities in Essex County fared in Maclean's safe towns rankings.

Essex came in 7th with a crime severity index of 25.35, down 25 per cent from five years ago.

Kingsville was in 8th place as the crime severity index fell 9 per cent from 2013 to 25.51.

LaSalle placed 9th with a crime severity index of 26.62, up 25 per cent in the past five years.

Tecumseh was in 12th place measuring 27.25, and Lakeshore had a crime severity index of 27.7 and came in 14th place.

Overall, the crime severity index has risen for the third consecutive year after falling for the previous 11, but Statistics Canada says a variety of factors account for the increase including a rise in the number of sexual assaults reported to police since the MeToo movement began.

Last week, BlackburnNews.com reported Windsor placed 51st on Maclean's most dangerous cities rankings. By comparison, Leamington was 149th on the list, and Lakeshore, Tecumseh, LaSalle, Kingsville and Essex all came in between 224th and 231st place.

In both surveys looked at 237 communities across the country.
