Windsor-Essex Remembers

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War, and there are ceremonies and activities across the region this weekend to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

BlackburnNews.com has compiled a list of activities.

Saturday, November 10

10:30 a.m. - The Windsor Regiment Association will present the Windsor Regiment Camp flag and poppies at the gravesite of WW1 veteran Ernest S. Wigle at Windsor Grove Cemetary, 455 Giles Blvd. E.

Wigle, who served as Windsor Mayor from 1905 to 1909, and again from 1937 to 1938, was a Lieutenant-Colonel for the 18th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the Great War. For his military service, he was awarded the Victorian Decoration.

11 a.m. - The Windsor Peace Coalition will hold its weekly anti-war picket in front of Jackson Park at the corner of Tecumseh Rd. and Ouellette Ave. The theme for this picket is "Remembrance as Never Again!".

6:30 p.m. - The Windsor Symphony Orchestra has created a moving Remembrance Day program paying tribute to those who experienced the horror and devastation of the First World War. Saturday's show is at the Leamington United Mennonite Church, 78 Oak St. E.

A second performance is in Windsor at the Heritage Auditorium, 400 Huron Church Rd. at 1:30 p.m.

Sunday, November 11

10 a.m. to 5 p.m. - Museum Windsor honours Remembrance Day with free admission to the Chimczuk Museum where two new mini-exhibits will be unveiled, "Windsor and World War I" and "The Spanish Influenza of 1918".

12 p.m. to 4 p.m. - The University of Windsor has joined 18 other Canadian universities and colleges to display "The World Remembers". Accessing an online database, the names of every man and woman killed during the First World War will be projected at the School of Creative Arts Armouries. The event also showcases an international collection of photos from the war.

Sunset (approx. 5:13 p.m.) - Communities across Canada will mark the end of the First World War with the ringing of 100 bells. The ringing of bells emulates the moment in 1918 when church bells across Europe tolled as the war came to an end. If you cannot make it to one of the organized ceremonies, Canadians are encouraged to ring a bell at your home.
