UPDATE: Flood watch and special weather statement as winds blow

The Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) has now issued a flood watch because of strong wind Tuesday and Wednesday.

ERCA said our area can expect wind gusts of up to 90 km/hr that could cause shoreline damage and flooding along Lake Erie, including Pelee Island.

The conservation authority adds there is the possibility for a strong water surge along the lake causing significant shoreline erosion with high waves and spray and the potential for damage to shoreline structures.

ERCA said there could also be flooding in low lying areas near the lake with the saturated ground, waves and spray and the forecasted rain.

The agency adds that people should take extra caution and avoid shoreline areas.

This advisory is in effect until Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement because of the wind conditions.

It is calling for wind gusts of up to 80 km/hr Tuesday afternoon and evening.  The agency says the wind will gradually weaken overnight.

In the meantime, it is warning residents there could be tree damage and local power outages.
