Officer in charge named for Windsor police's Amherstburg detachment

Windsor police have named their commanding officer for its soon-to-be functional Amherstburg detachment.

Windsor Police Service Staff Sergeant David DeLuca has been named the officer in charge of the Amherstburg detachment, which will become a part of the Windsor force effective January 1.

DeLuca has been with the Windsor police for 23 years, most recently working in the Special Projects Unit. Previously, he had worked in patrol, the Forensic Identification Branch, the Drug Enforcement Branch, street crimes, domestic violence and the Internet Child Exploitation Unit, according to a media release put out Friday. He is a lifelong Amherstburg resident.

"It is a privilege to be chosen as the officer in charge of the new Amherstburg Detachment of the Windsor Police Service and to be part of this milestone moment for the town of Amherstburg," said DeLuca in the release. "I look forward to the opportunity to work in my hometown and continue the tradition of exceptional police service that the residents have come to expect and enjoy."

Amherstburg Town Council approved a plan this past winter to have Windsor absorb the Amherstburg police force and begin patrols thereafter the new year. The move is expected to save the town about $587,000 a year initially. All current Amherstburg officers will begin work for Windsor in January with the police chief joining the WPS administration.
