Ford government seeks to boost tourism

Consultations will start this fall on a new strategy to boost tourism in the province.

Ontario Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport Sylvia Jones made the announcement at the Ontario Tourism Summit at Caesars Windsor Tuesday.

Tourism is a $34 billion industry in Ontario, accounting for more than four per cent of the province's gross domestic product. The sector employs about 390,000 people.

"Tourism is a key economic driver in Ontario," said Jones. "Our government for the people promised Ontario will once again be open for business. That's why we acted quickly to help job-creating businesses by reducing WSIB premiums and addressing the minimum wage."

The consultations will seek feedback on issues ranging from the role of government in promoting tourism, regulatory burdens, and workforce challenges.

"We'll consult with tourism operators and tourists to learn how to make Ontario a travel destination of choice and bring visitors back again and again," Jones said.

The Tourism Industry Association of Ontario is hosting the summit in Windsor. It is an opportunity for those in the sector to share new ideas and practices, network, and recognize industry leaders at the Ontario Tourism Awards of Excellence. More than 450 delegates are attending.
