Windsor-Essex celebrates legal pot

There are a couple of local events on Wednesday to celebrate the legalization of cannabis.

One is being held at 405 Tecumseh Rd. W in Windsor at 12 p.m. and is being dubbed "High Noon". It is a 19+ event and there's a $5 cover at the gate to benefit the Downtown Mission and the Women's Welcome Centre. The event is being organized by Leo Lucier of Windsor, who has been a longtime advocate of marijuana.

Lucier said he's "all geared up to celebrate the biggest day in Canada’s history."

The other 19+ event is at Aphria in Leamington from 11 a.m. to 4:20 p.m. A BBQ will be held along with live entertainment, giveaways and a dunk tank featuring Aphria CEO Vic Neufeld.

Windsor police remind the public that in Ontario you will need to be 19 years of age or older to buy, use, possess and grow recreational cannabis. People can possess a maximum of 30 grams of dried cannabis in public (roughly the weight of four to five loonies) and cannot consume cannabis in a vehicle that is being driven. Cannabis use will be permitted in locations where smoking tobacco is permitted under the Smoke-Free Ontario Act, such as private homes and many outdoor public spaces like sidewalks. Individuals will be able to grow up to four plants per residence.

A private retail licensing model will be implemented on April 1 when the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario will become the provincial regulator authorized to grant store licenses.
