Windsor Assembly workers help the environment

Some members of the workforce at Chrysler's Windsor Assembly Plant will help nurture the local environment Sunday.

Members of the plant's Joint Workforce Environment Committee (JWEC) are teaming up with the Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) and the Detroit River Canadian Cleanup (DRCC) to expand their Grand Marais Meadow, an area of green land bordering the plant's southern boundary off Walker Rd.

The plant is using the occasion to celebrate its certification with the Wildlife Habitat Council, in the Urban Habitat Restoration category.

Dan Mustac, the plant's environment pillar lead, said the expansion of the meadow is a key step in advancing their commitment to improving green areas and preserving wetlands.

"In our quest for Gold Plant status within the World Class Manufacturing System, the environment is an important part of managing our footprint," said Mustac in a news release. "We continue to help support the unique biodiversity of the region. The Windsor Assembly Plant is committed to greening the community."

This is the 11th year plant employees will be planting. Over that time, more than a thousand shrubs, trees, wildflowers and grasses have been planted around the factory area for pollinators and other forms of wildlife.

The plant's JWEC has been in place for over 20 years, working to help make the facility and the surrounding area environmentally-friendly.

The meadow is located on Grand Marais Rd. E. between Walker Rd. and Chrysler Centre Drive.
