Old human bones discovered near Ambassador Bridge

Windsor police are reporting that human remains have been found during an archeological dig near the Ambassador Bridge.

The remains were discovered around 2:30 p.m. on Friday at a site on Riverside Drive near Huron Church Road.

Police said photos were taken and given to a coroner in Toronto and the remains are confirmed to be old human bones consistent with an old burial ground. They will now be turned over to the proper Indigenous authorities to be properly relocated.

The Ambassador Bridge company is conducting an archeological dig around its potential new span in that area. The dig started at the end of May and is in partnership with Walpole Island First Nation.

Dr. Dean Jacobs, a consulting manager with Walpole Island, said he believes this site under the bridge at Riverside Drive and Indian Road is the most significant in Ontario and the work will recover thousands of historical artifacts. Jacobs said the artifacts are expected to date back 10,000 years and they're trying to determine if they will go into a repository, a culture centre or a museum.
