Joe Comartin named Consul General in Detroit

Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister has named the new consul general in Detroit, and it is a familiar name to those living in Windsor-Tecumseh.

Chrystia Freeland has appointed Joe Comartin the new consul general of Canada in Detroit. He replaces Douglas George.

Comartin served as the NDP MP for Windsor-Tecumseh for 14 years before announcing his retirement in 2014.  Since then, he has been teaching political science and law at the University of Windsor.

He will start in his new position on October 29.

The other appointee announced Friday is former Little Mosque on the Prairie star Zaib Shaikh who will become the new consul general of Canada in Los Angeles.

Consul generals work to represent Canadian goals and interests in their appointed communities. Comartin will also work within the network of consul generals in several U.S. cities including New York City, Miami, Chicago, Atlanta, Denver, San Francisco, and Washington.
