What's open and closed in Windsor-Essex this Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving is one of the days where many people are at home with their families. To that end, institutions throughout Windsor-Essex will be either closed or on abbreviated hours.

Thanksgiving is a statutory holiday, and all federal, provincial and municipal offices will be closed Monday, October 8. There will be no Canada Post delivery.

All ServiceOntario branches will be closed on Monday. However, selected transactions such as vehicle ownership and driver's licence renewals can still be performed through their official website.

All banks and credit unions will be closed in observance of Thanksgiving.

All publicly-funded school boards will not have classes on Monday, along with the University of Windsor and all St. Clair College campuses.

All Beer Store locations will be closed Monday, and there will be no Beer Xpress home delivery available. All LCBO outlets will be closed as well. Regular hours for both will resume on Tuesday.

Devonshire Mall and Tecumseh Mall will be closed on Thanksgiving. Many retail outlets and chain restaurants will either be closed or on holiday hours. Be sure to call ahead to avoid disappointment.

All branches of the Windsor Public Library and the Essex County Library will be closed Thanksgiving, then reopen for regular hours Tuesday.

In the city of Windsor, the 311 call centre will be closed Monday, while the 211 service will be operating 24 hours a day as usual.

All community centres, arenas and customer care centres in Windsor will be closed Thanksgiving with the exception of pre-arranged rentals. Indoor pools will be closed with the exception of the Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre, which will be open 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. for adult fit lanes, as well as 6 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. then 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. for open adult swim. The centre’s fitness centre will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Residential garbage, yard waste and recyclable collection in Windsor normally done on Monday will be delayed a day. Commercial garbage collection will take place as usual. The public drop-off centre at Central and EC Row in Windsor will be closed on Thanksgiving but reopen Tuesday from 8am to 5pm.

Adventure Bay Family Water Park will be open 10am to 4pm Thanksgiving Monday.

There will be no parking enforcement in Windsor on Monday. Metered street parking is free Thanksgiving and all traffic fine payment offices will be closed.

Transit Windsor buses will run Thanksgiving on a Sunday and holiday schedule. It is also Columbus Day, a federal holiday in the U.S., but the tunnel bus to Detroit will operate on a regular weekday schedule with the last bus leaving the Windsor International Transit Terminal at 7 p.m.
