Union local providing 600 area families with Thanksgiving dinner

Thanks to the Canadian Union of Public Employees, 600 Windsor-Essex families who otherwise will have gone without this holiday, will have a Thanksgiving dinner.

Members of Local 543 will distribute hampers complete with all the trimmings Friday as part of their fifth annual Operation Giveback.

"Our members know that Thanksgiving is an important holiday for many families and that a good meal is at the heart of this celebration," said President of CUPE 543, Jason Parent. "We don't want to see anyone miss out on the chance to celebrate with their loved ones, and we are happy to do our part."

The hampers include a turkey for families and a chicken for single residents. Reusable grocery and insulated thermos bags will hold carrots, potatoes, onions, stuffing, apples, cookies, and for families with children, a bag of candy.

The primary distribution point will be at the Unemployed Help Centre on Cantelon Dr. in Windsor.  Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau will help hand the turkeys out at 2:45 p.m.

There are nine other distribution points across the city.

CUPE 543 represents more than 1,500 public service workers including inside workers with the City of Windsor, Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, ABC Day Nursery of Windsor, Windsor-Essex Community Housing Corporation, Seasons Retirement Communities in Amherstburg, and Great Beginnings Child-Centered Co-operative.
