Empty-netters sink Spitfires 4-1

Rickard Hugg was not giving the Windsor Spitfires hugs Saturday night.

The Kitchener Ranger scored his first two goals of the regular season late in regulation, scoring two empty-net goals to seal a 4-1 win over the Spits at the WFCU Centre.

The Spitfires' record is now even at 2-2 for four points in the OHL West Division.

Will Cuylle demonstrated his scoring ability once more when he picked up his second goal of the season early in the first period, putting Windsor up 1-0, but that would turn out to be the only offence Windsor could muster inn the contest. Chase Campbell, in his second game since arriving in a trade from the Owen Sound Attack, tied the game up for Kitchener with 1:56 remaining in the frame. The Spits dominated the Rangers in that period in shots, 12 to 3 in favour.

The Rangers took a 2-1 lead in the second period with that segment's only goal. Greg Meireles scored at 9:10.

Late in the third period, Windsor goaltender Kari Piiroinen was pulled for the extra attacker. Hugg scored his first empty-netter at 17:30, his second one just 22 seconds later.

Piiroinen had 15 stops in net for Windsor. Despite Windsor being the more aggressive team in driving the net, Kitchener backstop Luke Richardson stopped all but one of the 34 shots he faced.

The Spitfires welcome the rival London Knights to the WFCU Centre on Thursday night.
