Gas prices typically fall in September, but they are down more than usual as the Ford government fulfils half of one of its campaign promises.
As of noon, the price at the pumps in Windsor ranged from 114.4 cents per litre to 117.6 cents per litre. Earlier in the day, they were 124.0 cents per litre.
In Chatham, the average price at the pump as of noon Wednesday was a little over 127 cents per litre., while in London it ranged from 121.4 cents per litre to 123.9 cents per litre.
"Generally speaking, we do see prices in Windsor, Chatham and London that can vary as much as 9 cents per litre during the day," said Gasbuddy.com Senior Analyst Dan McTeague. "We are now looking at prices that are on average what they were back in March 2015."
Prices fell about 4.5 cents per litre because of the cancellation of Ontario's cap and trade program. McTeague said gas prices typically fall at this time of year, and the cut in gas taxes is a bonus.
"We don't have massive amounts of demand that we traditionally see during the summer driving season," he said. "Winter gasoline, which must be distributed to all gas stations by at least September 15, tends to be a lot less expensive for refineries to produce."
Premier Doug Ford promised a 10 cents per litre cut on the price of gas, and McTeague believes the rest of the price cut may come next year, depending on provincial finances.
