Police puzzled by Habitat for Humanity break-ins

Windsor police are still investigating a series of break-and-enters at a local charity.

The headquarters of Habitat for Humanity Windsor Essex has been broken into three times since the beginning of September.

The first incident took place on September 3. Officers went to an area near the Habitat ReStore on Devon Drive near Devonshire Mall, where a passerby told them a power tool was found in a nearby parking lot. When the resident looked closer at Habitat's property, there were signs of forced entry. It was determined that the tool was stolen from the charity.

The second break-and-enter was on Thursday. Police were called to the ReStore again where they found that thieves entered the rear yard and damaged property. A number of power tools were taken in that incident.

The most recent incident took place overnight on Friday into Saturday, when police discovered a scene similar to the second break-and-enter. Damage was noticed to the charity's rear yard and more items were taken, including a large truck with the Habitat logo on the side.

The truck was found later that morning on Russell Street near Chappell Avenue on the west side of Windsor with extensive damage. Police said it was seen at assorted locations throughout the city from Friday night into Saturday morning.

Investigators would like to speak with anyone who may have video surveillance that captured the vehicle or the suspects. Anyone who can provide that evidence, or with any information on these break-and-enters, is urged to call Windsor police at (519) 255-6700, ext. 4350. Anyone not wishing to identify themselves can phone in an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers at (519) 258-TIPS (8477) or submit one online.
