Stolen Habitat for Humanity truck found, tools and equipment still missing

Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex is reeling after two thefts in two days.

On September 13 tools and supplies were stolen. Just one day later, they believe the same suspects came back and stole the organization’s truck.

Executive director Fiona Coughlin says their truck was found today. She credits the power of the community.

“I think people that follow us on Twitter and Facebook made the call to police,” said Coughlin. “It’s the community that found this truck and it’s the community working together that can solve the problems of the community.”

Coughlin said the truck has been stripped. The radio was taken and the vehicle is not driveable.

“It’s good news that the truck was found, but we have a lot of tools to replace.”

There is still $40,000 in tools and equipment missing.

“To those individuals who stole from Habitat for Humanity. I want to let you know that you stole from an organization that is dedicated to helping people in your community,” Coughlin posted on her Facebook page after the first theft.

A donation page has been set up on the Habitat for Humanity website. According to Coughlin, 100 per cent of donations will go to replacing the tools and supplies intended for Build 65. That project is set to begin on September 22.

“We’ve got this,” said Coughlin. “The power of community is what found our truck and that’s what builds our houses too.”

Windsor police are still investigating. Anyone with tips regarding the thefts should contact them at 519-255-6700.
