Fatal Drunk Driving Crash Sends Essex Man To Prison

A 54-year-old Essex man who killed a Windsor couple in a collision has been sentenced to four years in prison.

Larry and Patricia Best, 66, were riding their motorcycle on Manning Rd. in August of 2017 when a van on County Rd. 46 struck their bike.

The driver of the van, Gerald Decoste, was sentenced in a Windsor provincial court on Thursday, after being convicted of two counts of driving a motor vehicle in excess of 80 mg of alcohol causing death. He is also banned from driving for three years and has to submit a DNA sample.

Decoste was also previously charged with two counts of impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death, but court officials say those charges were dropped.

Decoste posted a Facebook message on August 19 saying, "I've done some terrible things and I am very sorry to the people I've hurt. I wish things could have been different," he says. "I am truly sorry for the pain that I have caused and the damage I have done."
