Pickup Vs House Crash Prompts Resident To Demand Action

Another spectacular crash at the corner of Moy Ave. and Cataraqui St. in Windsor has at least one neighbour asking what the city will do to prevent future accidents.

Around 4:45pm on Thursday, a pickup truck knocked down some parking signs before it jumped the curb, narrowly missing a woman mowing her lawn.

"She was pushed out of the way of the truck by her son," says Robert Stewart who lives on Moy Ave. "The truck proceeded to rip the foundation cinder blocks and the siding off their house... and then crashed through their fence... a boat... another parked vehicle... and then their garage."

Stewart estimates there have been up to 30 accidents in the 18 years since he moved onto the block.

"My kids know because of how many accidents we've seen, don't stand on those corners," he says. "I've seen way too many cars just jump the curb and end up against a tree."

Stewart emailed his city councillor, Ward 4's Chris Holt.

Holt says the city can put up four-way stops, but ultimately drivers need to take responsibility.

"We all have to collectively take ownership of our community and make them safer," he says. "All the motorists out there, you need to slow down and recognize the fact that people live here."

That said, he admits there is a new program at City Hall that may be able to address the issue.

"City council also implemented a new school zone policy which really takes the safety of pedestrians more into account," says Holt, noting that Prince Edward Public School is nearby. "Administration is learning about it. Council is learning about it. Because that crash was horrific."

Holt also plans to bring it up with the city's traffic department again.

Windsor police Constable Andrew Drouillard says the crash is still under investigation, but the driver has been charged with careless driving.
