OPP Warn About Dangerous Grad Parties

The Ontario Provincial Police in Essex County is warning teens about the risks of attending or hosting graduation and prom parties as the school year ends.

Police say drugs and alcohol are often found at those gatherings, and there could be negative consequences for anyone who falls victim to temptation.

They warn bad decisions made under the influence can lead to serious injury or death.

Property owners are not immune from consequences either. Police say they have in the past been held liable for injuries sustained during parties on their properties.

Police emphasize that unsupervised after-prom parties or "field parties" have the potential to be unsafe.

Reports of assault, both physical and sexual, drug and alcohol-related offences, thefts, and property damage at these parties are frequently reported and investigated by police.

There will be an increased police presence during the next few weeks to protect students.
