Leamington's Hospital Gets Lifeline From LHIN

The former Leamington Memorial Hospital is getting a financial boost to deal with extraordinary pressures.

Erie Shores Healthcare has an operating deficit, and the Erie St. Clair Local Health Integration Network has approved an extra $750,000 to get the small hospital by for the next few weeks, until the end of the fiscal year.

The provincial funding formula is changing, and it's hitting the 60-bed hospital hard.

LHIN board members say keeping the obstetrics service operating is very expensive, and a recent move of stroke services to Windsor means less funding for the hospital. They say the stroke service didn't have enough volume and replacing the lost funding is very limited and challenging.

Board members say Erie Shores Healthcare will be better supported by the ministry next fiscal year with a new funding model and by being designated a small hospital.
