The Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) says the region has been upgraded to a flood watch.
According to the conservation authority, a significant weather system has now started to cross through the Essex region. Rainfall amounts of up to 35mm are predicted for Monday evening. Rainfall totals from Monday through Wednesday morning could range from between 40 to 75mm.
ERCA says there is also a risk of thunderstorms. Temperatures are expected to be well above freezing with daytime highs between 5c and 15c.
It is reported that the entire region currently has semi-frozen ground conditions and is saturated due to the recent warm weather, snowmelt, and rain. According to ERCA, runoff generated by the extra snowmelt and predicted rain has the high potential to cause flooding throughout the entire region.
The conservation authority says increased flow is expected in all waterways. It says there is also the potential for ice blockages at bridge and culvert locations as this ice degrades and moves downstream.
Residents should take extra caution and avoid rivers, lakes, ditches, streams, and ponds. The combination of slippery banks, melting ice, and cold water is extremely dangerous. Children, pets, and livestock should be kept away from waterways as well.
Property owners are also advised to ensure nearby catch basins are free of debris.
