What To Do Once Windsor City Hall Is Torn Down

Moving day is coming up fast for staff who work at Windsor City Hall.

Mayor Drew Dilkens, giving an update on progress to build the new city hall, says the $28.5-million project is on time and on budget.

If the work continues to progress on schedule, Dilkens says staff should move in the last weekend of May.

"If we look at the work that's been done on the new city hall and the very favourable days that they've had to do the construction, we are way ahead of the curve," says Dilkens.

Soon after that, the existing city hall will be torn down. He says the project's $43.9-million total budget includes that expense, but it will not be a case of just bringing in a wrecking ball.

"There is an amount set aside for the demolition of this building," says Dilkens. "There will have to be some asbestos abatement done in this building and then prep this building to be demolished."

That is scheduled for June 2018 to June 2019, and once space is cleared, Dilkens says discussion will begin with the public to create a new civic space.

"Perhaps relocating the Charles Clark Square ice rink and having it closer to city hall and having a water feature in the summer," he says. "All conversations we'll have moving forward."

The cost of the civic space is not included in the project's total budget.

Construction started in June 2016.
