Hospice Adding Two Beds

Around 40 more families a year will be helped by Hospice of Windsor Essex thanks to the addition of two new beds.

The province announced a $400,000 committment to the capital costs of the project Monday morning. It has also committed the annual funding for the operation of the additional beds at $210,000.

Executive Director Carol Derbyshire says this will go a long way to reduce the waiting list for residential care.

"There's always someone wanting to come but we don't always have the beds to accommodate them so this is giving us more space so we can accommodate more patients," says Derbyshire.

Construction will begin immediately and, if winter weather cooperates, will be completed in the spring. The construction project includes the addition of two new beds and the renovation of the dining room, kitchen, and sunroom areas.

The total project will cost $1.2-million. The funds were raised through donations from multiple regular donors.

"We did a rather quiet campaign, reached out to a few of our donors who had often mentioned if you add on we're in, and they all responded so the money is raised," says Derbyshire.

After construction, the Hospice of Windsor-Essex County will have a 10 bed facility in Windsor and a 10 bed facility in Leamington.
