Go-Karting For Huntington's Awareness

The Huntington's Society of Canada is celebrating a record fundraising year with a go-karting event at Zap Zone Fun Centre in west Windsor.

This year's Windsor-Essex County Indy Go-Kart Challenge has already raised $16,700 in pledges for Sunday's event.

It is not too late to take part. Registration is at 8:45am Sunday, September 10 at the centre at 1930 Ambassador Dr. The event runs from 9:30am to 11:30am.

Money raised from the event will help fund programs and raise awareness of Huntington Disease, which is a hereditary and fatal brain disorder.

The society says one in 7,000 Canadians are affected by the disorder, and a child who has a parent with the disease has a 50% chance of inheriting it. Symptoms usually appear in those affected between the ages of 30 and 45 and worsen over time.

Researchers hope genetic research into Huntington Disease will unlock mysteries associated with other diseases like Alzheimer's, ALS, Parkinson's and cancer.
