Residents Help Firefighters Tackle LaSalle House Fire

Sometime around 7:20pm Tuesday, a fire broke out at a house in the 1500-block of Durocher Dr. in LaSalle and residents sprang into action.

By the time firefighters got to the scene behind Windsor Crossing Outlet Mall, the neighbours were pouring water from a garden hose on fire on the exterior of the house.

"Probably more important than that, they had already ensured all the residents were out," says LaSalle Fire Chief Dave Sutton.

Usually, fire officials do not encourage residents to fight fires on their own, but Sutton says this group were making sure they kept a safe distance.

"They were being cautious," he says. "There was a body of fire on the outside deck and on the outside of the residence. They were actually somewhat effective in keeping it in check until firefighters arrived."

"It's nice to see when neighbours come to the aid of their neighbouring residents," Sutton continues.

Nobody was hurt in the fire which caused about $100,000 damage. The cause is listed as accidental.
