New Building On The Way For Women's Shelter In Windsor

The Welcome Centre shelter for women in west Windsor is overflowing and needs more space.

Executive Director Lady Laforet says six women had to sleep on the floor this past weekend because the shelter is over-capacity.

Laforet says the shelter will have a larger home soon but a location hasn't been disclosed yet.

"We have our eyes on a building. We're very excited and we're hoping we'll have a public announcement for that hopefully by the end of fall that we will have purchased a forever home of our own," says Laforet.

The Welcome Centre will go from 12 beds at its current site on Bridge Ave. and ten to 20 beds at hotels to 20 beds at its new site with ten family units that will accommodate families of six or seven.

Laforet says the new home allows families to be housed under one roof instead of having some at the shelter and some at hotels.

"Hopefully over the next few months we will have a very big announcement and it will probably be the biggest announcement in the agency's history that we're finally moving ahead with our own forever home. We're looking at program expansion, increasing beds and moving the families over," Laforet says.

Laforet says the new shelter will still have a residential feel and will still be close to bus routes.

"We have very unique needs especially when it comes to shelter, safety and security and wanting to ensure that the families and the single women are provided the separate services that they need. So, it was a very narrow scope of places that were available that would meet our specific needs," says Laforet.
