UWindsor Offers New Wine Research Classes

University of Windsor's Faculty of Science will soon be offering research classes to explore the region's wine industry.

The faculty's associate dean, Maria Cioppa, says the university has worked with local wineries to receive input on the new course offerings, as well as a new lab that is being built.

"They're putting together this new wine analysis lab that will [have] our undergraduate students working in it, giving them experience, and helping them contribute to the wineries of the area," says Cioppa.

Cioppa says the university is still in the preliminary stages of building the lab, but classes are planned to focus on the analysis of wine's basic chemical and physical properties.

"This is so important to the Faculty of Science that our students can go out, go out into the community, talk to them, learn from them-- we call this experiential learning. We want our students to be involved. We want them to be able to participate in the community," explains Cioppa.

Cioppa says wine is still a major subject of discussion all around the world, with many eager to discover what controls and affects the taste of wine.

University of Windsor is also supporting the region's wine industry by partnering with EPIC Wineries and Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island to present a new exhibit at Chimczuk Museum. The exhibit includes historical artifacts and displays of the region's wine making eras.
