Residents Encouraged To Register For Emergency System

Amherstburg's fire chief wants residents to sign up for the town's new emergency notification system, just not all on the same day.

"What we've learned from some of our neighbours when they implemented it, is when they did it town-wide it can generate a lot of questions. It can, quite frankly, overwhelm us," says Bruce Montone.

Montone says the days set up for registration follow the garbage pickup schedule.

He says town staff will be available at the Libro Union Community Complex to answer any questions about the new system and help those who do not have a computer with which to access the website.

The dates are between Tuesday, August 8 and Monday, August 14. The system will go into effect soon after the last registration day.

The town is working with Everbridge, a world leader in unified critical communications, and the notification system will let residents know if there is an emergency, a road closure, or a special event.

It is similar to the service adopted in other Essex County municipalities.

Residents can choose to get the message on their cell phone, home line, email or text. They can also choose more than one mode of contact.

Montone says even if you only work in the town, you can sign up if you use your Amherstburg contact number.
