More Services Needed For Autistic Adults

Many families with children with autism continue to struggle to access services.

Agencies and family members met with local NDP MPPs Taras Natyshak and Percy Hatfield, along with MPP Monique Taylor, the NDP Critic for Children and Youth Services to discuss the current challenges.

Maryann LaFlamme, mother of 24-year-old Megan, says finding a program for her adult child with autism is difficult enough, but the costs can be overwhelming.

"There isn't many programs.  We have a lack -- we need a program for adults with autism that will help them directly," says LaFlamme. "The amount of funding you get, to the cost of the program -- that money can be anywhere from $95 a day depending on your needs."

Taylor says they are hearing the same challenges around the province.

"It's one struggle after another, after another, each transition in life, each growth period in life, every time there's a change in life, these families have to fight harder than ever to overcome each and every single hurdle," says Taylor.

There were a total of 12 agencies present at the round table discussion Thursday.
