Snout House Restrictions To Be Discussed

The planning committee of Windsor City Council wants to take a further look at limiting "snout houses" or "thrusting garages."

It's a design of homes or townhouses that the garage protrudes further than the front door of the home.

Councillor Chris Holt says the committee wants administration to do more research and consultation so they can set out guidelines for all future development.

"I'm really hoping that this is a definitive rule that we establish in the city that makes it easier for developers to understand what they can and cannot build within the city limits," says Holt.

Planners with the city site safety concerns and neighbourhood vitality for reasons to limit this kind of home design.

"It really does kill a lot of the street life, a lot of the public realm, it's a less quality of a public realm when we do things like that," says Holt.

Ward 7 Councillor Irek Kusmierczyk says based on experiences in his ward, he believes the argument that this design contributes to more crime and less social neighbourhoods is inaccurate.

"The sense of community and the sense of neighbourliness is so strong. You have residents that meet and great each other on their doorsteps.  They meet each other in front of their garages.  They even host little get togethers inside the garage," says Kusmierczyk.

The recommendations from the committee to begin the dialogue to formalize the city's position on "thrusting garages" will go to city council for formal approval.
