Historic Amherstburg Home Gets Donation

An Amherstburg landmark is getting a big boost in its renovation efforts.

The Amherstburg Belle Vue House National Historic Site is receiving a $100,000 donation from the Gatfield Family Foundation. The donation is expected to take a huge chunk out of the price tag to restore the home, which is on the Heritage Canada National Trust's top-ten list of the country's endangered properties.

The foundation will receive naming rights to the dining room on the main floor in recognition of the gift. There are five total rooms on the main floor that are being renovated as part of a $1-million Phase 1 fundraising goal set by the town of Amherstburg and the Amherstburg Belle Vue Conservancy.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have the Gatfield Family Foundation partner with us," says conversancy treasurer Michael Prue in a statement. "It is hoped that this major contribution will persuade others to support our efforts and those of the town of Amherstburg in opening the doors of Belle Vue."

A cheque presentation will take place at the house on Dalhousie St. S Friday.
