Fight To Save Log Cabin Continues

A Metis group hoping to save a pioneer log cabin in Belle River is feeling discouraged after Lakeshore Town Council deferred a decision on its future.

On Tuesday night, council asked administration for a report outlining options for where the cabin could be located and how much potential traffic it could have.

Suzanne Allison, a member of the Belle River log cabin committee, says they are making the decision more complicated than it needs to be.

"The Belle River log cabin committee is asking council to approve giving us a piece of land in Optimist Park to put the log cabin on," says Allison.

She says they already have funds to move the cabin and are applying for grants to have it refurbished. Programming for the cabin will be run by volunteers with the Voyager Metis group.

"I don't understand why they're saying 'we Lakeshore' because Lakeshore is not going to be involved in that unless they want to take it over from us. If they don't want us to be involved and they want to take over programming, and take over maintenance of the house, great, at least the house gets saved," says Allison.

She says if council does not make a decision by October the group is prepared to walk away and the cabin will likely be destroyed.
