Construction Starts On Sandwich Towne Roundabout

Traffic is being detoured away from a busy corner in west Windsor now that construction has begun on the city's newest roundabout.

This one will be at the intersection of Riverside Dr. W, Rosedale Ave. and University Ave. W.  Drivers are being asked to take Wyandotte St. W or Mill St. instead.

The project is a large one. Project Manager Tiffany Pocock says it is not just a roundabout.

"There's a water main component to it, and we're also adding a multiuse trail," she says. "And, some bike lanes."

The roundabout alone will cost $850,000.

The project also includes a $381,000 statue of Chief Tecumseh, a decision which is controversial in the west end neighbourhood. Some residents told City Council back in May they felt it would be better suited for Patterson Park.

While construction is expected to frustrate some drivers, Pocock hopes everyone will be patient.

"Roundabouts are not easy to construct just because you have to completely wipe out that entire intersection," says Pocock. "It's two months. Two months and a week. In timelines, that's not very long, but I know it's painful."

All of the work is expected to wrap up by the first week of September, in time for an unveiling of the statue.
