UPDATE: New Contract Ratified At Heligear-Northstar Aerospace

After two days on the picket line, workers at Heligear-Northstar Aerospace in Lakeshore are headed back to work.

The company and Unifor Local 444 reached a new tentative deal early Tuesday morning, and voted 63.8% in favour of the new three-year contract later that afternoon.

"Obviously there was some frustrations because we did have strike action," says Local 444 President Dino Chiodo. "There's some concerns that have to be reviewed and looked at and we're working collaboratively with them. We heard their concerns on the picket line, and that being said, we tried to understand and rectify some of those working standards that we have to correct."

The 62 Heligear-Northstar Aerospace workers have been on strike since Sunday after 51% of the employees rejected the first tentative deal.

"We did put some working language together [in the contract] that talks about people who transfer from one job to another job, and how that's managed," he says.

Chiodo says when employees transfer to the different job within the company, they will now earn the highest wage between the two positions.  He says the new contact also address how employees train other workers.

"We revisited everything that we had in front of us. We wanted to make sure we remain competitive because they're talking about expanding our operations here in Windsor and Essex County," he says.
