East Africa is benefiting from the generosity in the Windsor area.
The Windsor Islamic Council and local Somali Community leaders have raised more than $400,000 to help Somalia, Kenya, and Ethiopia deal with devastating famine.
Abdullahi Cisman, vice chair of the Windsor Islamic Council, says the amount raised over two weeks is amazing.
"It's beyond our expectations. Our target was set at $200,000 and we doubled that number. At first we were at $200,00 and then we reached $300,000 and then we said let's target for $400,000," says Cisman.
The United Nations estimates that nearly 14.5-million people in Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya are at the brink of starvation.
Cisman says the funds will provide much needed humanitarian assistance to people and will be used to build water projects.
"Water and food distributions and long term projects, such as water projects, that would assist people to be able to live in the future if this was to happen again," Cisman says.
Cisman says the Windsor Islamic Council has a history of helping others and this feels good.
